Overview of automounting NFS and CIFS shares Mounting CIFS and NFS shares using the mount command, won't survive a reboot. Luckily there are three different ways to auto-mount CIFS and NFS shares when the machine boots up: Announcement I have released my new course on Udemy, Kubernetes By Example. If you now start up iTunes again, it will try to locate the media files in the /Volumes/music folder, like I manually specified it. However, autofs will now automatically mount the network share for me and iTunes won't complain about a missing volume. Autofs is a program that automatically mounts specified directories on an on-demand basis. It is based on a kernel module for high efficiency, and can manage both local directories and network shares. These automatic mount points are mounted only when they are accessed, and unmounted after a certain period of inactivity. This on-demand behavior saves bandwidth and results in better performance.

  • 1automounting network shares via /etc/fstab
  • 2manually mounting network shares

With the usual caveats to be careful editing the /etc/fstab file, as you can disable your ability to boot with a single typo.

fstab

Start with your existing /etc/fstab file. Here is a sample:

adding nfs to fstab

Add the files to include the NFS share: Microsoft edge 79 0 309 15.

This accesses the NFS shares at the IP address 10.5.5.5, specifically the ones at /share/documents, and mounts them locally at /mnt/documents.

The various options do things like telling to keep the drive mounted if possible, not to wait longer than 10 seconds for the share if it is unavailable on the network, and end the line with 0 to indicate no consistency check is needed on boot. Leech 3 1 42. (systemd is required for the x-systemd.automount option to be understood).

adding samba to fstab

Samba shares can be added to /etc/fstab similarly:

perhaps you don't want network shares to AUTOMATICALLY mount. in that case, you can add the noauto option, like this:

NFS
